Distractions - The Death Knell To Your Business
You might read this title and think - distractions - a death knell to my business - seems like hyperbole. But it plays a pivotal role on how your business functions. We completed a survey among small healthcare businesses and discovered that among all of the prevailing issues owners and office managers encountered - a lack of time ranked among the most common issues. The true culprit in all of their stories remained one - distractions.
It is critical to define what a distraction is and to ask oneself how often you as an owner encounter distractions throughout your day. A distraction is a interruption to the normal flow of a day. Distractions can be an employee arriving 30 minutes late for the third day in the week, hiring and onboarding a new employee, processing timesheets and payroll but the list goes on.
For a moment, imagine what a fully productive day looks like within 8-9 hours - viewing the itinerary for the day, reviewing patient charts, seeing all of your patients at their scheduled appointment times, facilitating your weekly staff meeting and leaving the office on time to have dinner with family. Of the five days a week you are working, how often does this reflect your normal day. If the answer 0 days, then you have a distraction problem.
In our study, we discovered that a vast majority of owners and office managers carry these distractions home with them, often times impacting personal commitments and leading to “entrepreneurial burnout”. Burnout often leads to clouded judgment when confronted with these distractions and that’s where mistakes happen.
